Abstract/Statement
I move handmade, and found objects around like a writer with words. I use object-relationships, light, and color to compose moments of tension, rhythm and metaphor. When making art, I feel I get to have a chance to take comfort in the unknown.
My concerns are with the life of the invisible, dirt, secrets, and the environment they belong— the sacred impulse guides me— I am free
I create work that yearns to be understood. I am able to offer something that could be a stand in for myself, or the context I exist in.
Honestly, I’m just tryna’ live that sweet bliss.
Thank you for reading.
Eliza Gooding
Artists Biography
Eliza Gooding is a woman, 28 years old, guardian-brute, key holder, formalist, craftswoman, and artist
Born in Fort Campbell, Tennessee, and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, she was raised by parents in the military. Because of the loss of her parents at an early age, Eliza has always worked to understand her identity first, as an artist, then as a person, and now as an American.
In her recent works, Eliza has been increasingly drawn to themes of the American experience, reflecting on what it means to navigate the complexities of national identity and personal history.
Her current works function as a means to kill her childhood nostalgia and capture her memory and upbringing through sculpture. She works with a variety of handmade and found objects.
Gooding received a Bachelor's in Fine Arts and Craft with a Ceramics concentration from the Oregon College of Art and Crafts in 2020. She has recently graduated with a Master's in Fine Art, with an emphasis in sculpture at The Pratt Institute.
Notably, Eliza has maintained a ceramics practice for 13 years. She operates her ceramics studio and lives in Brooklyn, New York, where she makes and sells a variety of handmade ceramics. Eliza’s art is a reflection of her own evolving journey. It is a practice not only in aesthetic exploration but in existential discovery.
